The Milan metro, with its four lines, stands as the most extensive metro system in Italy, a construction achievement finalized in the 1960s.
Despite having merely four lines and 111 stations, the Milan Metro boasts the title of Italy’s longest metro line, measuring an impressive 58.7 miles or 94.5 km.
Milan’s modern metro system had its origins in early twentieth-century projects, with the inauguration of the first line occurring in 1964, nearly a decade after its initial conception in 1957.
The Milan Metro consists of four numbered and color-coded lines:
Line M1 (red): Ideal for business travelers heading to Fiera Milano, this line also stops at iconic locations such as the Duomo and San Babila.
Line M2 (green): Conveniently stopping at Milano Centrale, M2 serves key locations in the city.
Line M3 (yellow): Highly convenient for tourists, M3 stops at the Duomo, Via Montenapoleone (Milan’s major commercial area), and Milano Centrale.
Line M5 (purple): Integrated with regional trains, M5 is of interest to visitors with stops at Garibaldi station and Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
Currently, the Milan Metro is expanding with the construction of the fifth line (blue).
Milan metro tickets and travel cards are available at metro stations, kiosks, and off-licenses. For regular metro users, buying multiple one-way tickets at once or opting for a travel card is recommended.
Operating daily from 6 am to 12:30 am (midnight), the Milan Metro adjusts its schedule to open from 7 am to 7:30 pm on December 25th and May 1st.
Train frequency varies based on the time of day, line, and day of the week, typically ranging from every 2-4 minutes within the city center to every 30 minutes at the outer stops of the M2 line.
