Milan’s taxis are a reliable means of navigating the city. Familiarize yourself with their fares and gain some useful advice for potential use during your stay.
While Milan’s public transport system is extensive and efficient, the city’s taxis offer a comfortable and convenient option, particularly when exploring beyond the city center.
Despite being a relatively small city with many attractions within walking distance, understanding Milan’s taxi services can prove useful during your stay. Unlike most European cities, Milan’s taxis are not readily hailed on the street. Instead, you can find them at designated taxi stops or book one in advance.
Milan’s taxis are considered relatively expensive, though not as much as in some other European cities. The official tariffs include:
Additional charges come into play when the taximeter hits €13.25 (US$14.50), with the price per kilometer increasing to €1.50 (US$1.60) and the waiting time per hour costing €39.27 (US$42.80). If the taxi exceeds 50 km/h for over 60 seconds, the per-kilometer rate rises to €1.70 (US$1.90), a consideration for those heading to Linate or Bergamo Airport. For trips to Malpensa Airport, a fixed rate applies from the city center.
If you book a taxi by phone, be aware that charges commence upon receiving the call, potentially resulting in a doubled fare depending on the taxi’s arrival time.
Examples: considering the minimum fares and per-kilometer tariffs, it’s challenging for a taxi ride to cost less than €6 (US$6.50). However, given Milan’s relatively small size, traversing the city from one end to the other typically amounts to around €10 (US$10.90).
