Milan Malpensa Airport

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) stands as Milan’s largest international airport, catering to the highest passenger volume. Annually, more than 28 million travelers embark on journeys to and from Malpensa, securing its position as Italy’s second most significant airport, trailing only behind Rome’s Fiumicino.

However, one drawback of this airport is its considerable distance from Milan’s city center. Situated 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Milan, it requires travelers to cover a substantial distance to reach the heart of the city.

Terminals

Malpensa Airport comprises two terminals situated at a considerable distance from each other. It is advisable to confirm your departure terminal in advance, as the transportation options by bus or train may differ for each terminal. In case of an oversight leading to the wrong terminal, there’s no need to fret, as both terminals are seamlessly connected by a complimentary shuttle service operating every 7 minutes.

Typically, traditional airlines operate from Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 caters to low-cost airlines, with a focus on carriers like EasyJet.

Getting from Malpensa Airport to Milan

Train

Two train services, Malpensa Express and Trenitalia, link Terminal 1 to Milan’s city center. Malpensa Express, running every 20 to 40 minutes, takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Milano Centrale, Cadorna, or Milan Porta Garibaldi. A single ticket to Milano Centrale or Cadorna costs €13 (US$14.20), and trains operate approximately every 15 minutes.

Bus

Autostradale, the bus company, provides a regular service connecting Milan’s Central Station with both terminals at Malpensa Airport. Buses depart from Milan to the airport between 4 am and 11 pm, while from Malpensa, the first bus leaves at 6 am, continuing until 12:30 am (midnight). Departures occur every 20 minutes, with the journey taking nearly an hour to reach the city center. The bus fare is €8 (US$8.70) for a one-way journey or €14 (US$15.30) for a return ticket. Children aged 3 to 11 pay €5 (US$5.50) per journey.

Transfer service

For a seamless and comfortable option, consider booking a private airport transfer service. A chauffeur awaits you at your terminal with a personalized sign and ensures a direct transfer to your hotel. To ensure a hassle-free journey and avoid any misunderstandings, online booking for a private airport transfer is available at a cost of €131 (US$142.90).

Taxi

While taking a taxi from Malpensa to Milan’s city center is convenient, it comes with a higher cost due to the distance. The fixed price for the journey is €100 (US$109.10), with a travel time of approximately 50 minutes. No additional charges should apply during the ride.
